Astrophysics Research
UC Berkeley, 2011 to 2014. Undergraduate researcher.
Undergraduate research in Alex Filippenko’s supernova group and Berkeley’s radio astronomy lab: watching stars explode, and building the instruments to listen.
What I did
- Co-authored a Monthly Notices paper on SN 2009ip, an unstable giant star that seemed to finally explode, after 120+ hours of remote observing at Lick Observatory.
- First author on the discovery notice for SN 2013gq, a new supernova in the galaxy NGC 2554.
- Designed and built a radio telescope from scratch, and devised a new way to remove radio interference from large datasets.
- At the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, restored a radio receiver and built a station to search for radio transients.
What happened
Published research, a new supernova on the record, and a telescope built by hand.
